What is a Hydrostatic Pressure Calculator?

It converts a mud weight and depth into the pressure the fluid column exerts at its base. Multiply the mud weight in pounds per gallon by the true vertical depth in feet and by the 0.052 field constant, and you have the hydrostatic pressure in psi — the number every mud-weight and kill-sheet decision starts from.

How is hydrostatic pressure calculated?

Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure exerted by a static column of fluid. In the oilfield it's found with pressure (psi) = 0.052 × mud weight (ppg) × true vertical depth (ft). The 0.052 constant converts pounds per gallon and feet into pounds per square inch, so entering the mud weight and depth gives you the pressure at the bottom of the column directly.

Should I use measured depth or true vertical depth?

Always use true vertical depth (TVD). Hydrostatic pressure depends only on the vertical height of the fluid column, not the length of hole drilled. On a deviated or horizontal well, measured depth is longer than TVD, so using it would badly overstate the pressure. Take TVD from your directional survey.

Where does the 0.052 constant come from?

It's a unit-conversion factor. One gallon of fluid weighing one pound spread over the pressure gradient works out to 0.051948 psi per foot per ppg, universally rounded to 0.052 in field formulas. It bundles the conversion between pounds per gallon, feet, and pounds per square inch into a single number.

Why does hydrostatic pressure matter in drilling?

It's the primary means of well control. The fluid column's hydrostatic pressure must exceed the formation pore pressure to keep formation fluids from entering the wellbore, while staying below the fracture pressure to avoid losses. Balancing mud weight to keep hydrostatic pressure in that window is a core drilling task.
