What is a Rate of Penetration Calculator?

How is rate of penetration calculated?

ROP is the footage drilled divided by the time spent drilling it: ROP (ft/hr) = footage (ft) / hours. Drill 500 feet in 24 rotating hours and your average ROP is about 20.83 ft/hr. It's a simple average over the interval, so the shorter and more uniform the interval, the more representative the figure.

Should I use rotating time or total time?

For a true drilling-efficiency figure, use on-bottom rotating hours — the time the bit was actually making hole. Including connections, tripping, or downtime measures overall progress rather than how fast the bit drills. Be consistent about which you use when comparing runs.

What affects ROP?

Weight on bit, rotary speed, bit type and wear, formation hardness, hydraulics and hole cleaning, and mud properties all influence ROP. Because so many variables interact, ROP is best compared across similar formations and bottom-hole assemblies rather than in absolute terms.

Why does ROP matter?

Rig time is the dominant cost of a well, so faster penetration in the right conditions lowers cost per foot. But chasing maximum ROP can shorten bit life or hurt hole quality, so operators optimize ROP alongside cost per foot and hole condition rather than maximizing it alone.
